I'm trying something new out called the Member Spotlight. You can volunteer or nominate someone. I'm thinking right now of doing this once a quarter and switch it up based on the number of submissions we get. We honor our PS4 brethren this go around LtoTheBoogie who has an amazing story to tell. Boogie was kind enough to co host our podcast I encourage you give it a listen (episode 26) http://www.soundcloud.com/over30clan and listen to his story first hand. Below you can read a more in depth biography.
Here's a little more background on the man of the hour!
Loren Marvin (LtotheBoogie) grew up in upstate New York and Pennsylvania. He graduated High School in 1996, in the small town of Corning, NY. He was on the delayed enlistment program for the US Air Force, and shipped off to Basic Training in San Antonio, TX that summer.
He was trained in Electronics, and spent the next four years in Misawa, Japan as an Electronic Countermeasures Journeyman. (He worked on radar jammers for F16’s) While in the Air Force, he met his wife and got married at the tender age of 20. They moved back to the States, Texas specifically, in 2000 to begin civilian life. They planned to grow the family, and that became a reality in 2005, with the birth of their daughter Naomi. 2 years later Naomi was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and they began their journey into understanding and support for the specific challenges of their daughter. They tried many schools over the years, both public and private, with little satisfactory conditions for the specific emotional and therapeutic needs they could see. They decided that Maranda, Loren’s wife could stay home and provide the best education and support that money couldn’t buy. Maranda and Loren began designing the framework for accomodation and cultivation of the specific skills their daughter possessed and learned an incredible skill set around pushing academically with emotional imbalances. Throughout this time Maranda also worked toward her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, while Loren taught Engineering in High School, and they also ran Houston Autism Resources and Support, as well as Support groups for parent of Autistic Children, and Social Skills groups for kids in Naomi’s age range.
In September, 2017 they pulled the trigger on opening their own non-profit private school for children with learning differences. Paradigm Development Center had finally been birthed for the Autism Community in greater Houston to benefit from. They acquired a 5 acre property in Cypress,TX that fits the model that they have designed of a variable holistic educational program. Students focus on emotional regulation in the mornings through meditation and then nature education of the property, before hitting the academics and athletics in the afternoons. Loren has had parents crying while explaining the changes they have seen in their children. One parent has explained that a monumental meltdown about math years ago,had them believing that their son would never do math again. Loren has so changed the narrative for their son that he is doing advanced algebra now, while also completing the Harvard CS50 course for introductory computer programming. Loren has made them see potentials in their son that they had no hope of every seeing.
During all of these time and efforts, Loren has used Gaming as a release from the stress of these challenging realities, and has made many lasting friendships in the Over30Clan. He is on our PS4 side, and is regularly spotted supporting player on Battlefield 1 or throwing amazing alley oops on NBA Live 18.
I'd like to thank Boogie for helping out on the podcast and sharing his story! Stay loud, stay proud brother!
